Inhumane behavior of bus drivers in Singapore: Incident of mistreatment of wheelchair users
Incident summary
On May 31, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at a bus stop in the Sembawang area of Singapore. A woman was boarding Tower Transit Singapore bus number 883 with her wheelchair-using mother when the bus driver failed to cooperate. The driver did not help her get off the ramp and continued the bus, ignoring the safety of passengers.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media and highlighted the need for responsible behavior and empathy for people with disabilities by bus drivers.
Incident details
1. Failure to cooperate while boarding a wheelchair user
The driver did not provide any assistance when the woman boarded the bus with her mother even after she got off the ramp. Since the woman's mother was overweight, it was difficult to get the wheelchair onto the bus. When a fellow passenger helped, the driver asked her to hurry up. The bus started before the wheelchair could be properly secured.
2. Driver's rude behavior and passenger safety risk
Even when getting off the bus, the driver refused to help the woman and became agitated saying "Just push her out lah!". A health worker passenger protested the driver's behavior, but the driver showed negligence in performing his duties.
3. Inconsiderate behavior towards elderly passengers
Later, when two elderly passengers boarded the bus, the driver drove the bus without waiting for them to sit down, which could have been dangerous for them.
Tower Transit Singapore's response
The passenger took videos and photos of the incident and filed a complaint with Tower Transit Singapore. Although there has been no official statement from the company yet. However, similar incidents have been investigated and taken action in the past.
Previous allegations of bus driver behaviour in Singapore
In July 2024, a video of the driver on bus number 858 being uncooperative with a wheelchair user went viral. Tower Transit investigated the incident and took action against the driver involved.
Call for improvement in passenger safety and transport service quality
These incidents clearly show that bus drivers need more training and awareness, especially to ensure compassionate treatment of disabled and elderly passengers.
What should be done?
✅ Driver sensitivity training – Special training to help disabled and elderly passengers.
✅ Speedy resolution of passenger complaints – Transport companies should investigate and take action quickly.
✅ Raising social awareness – Public awareness is needed to ensure the safety and dignity of all passengers.
Conclusion
This incident raises important questions about the quality of passenger service in Singapore's public transport system. Tower Transit Singapore and other transport agencies should monitor and improve the behavior of drivers to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
